Pair Of Ohio County Wrestlers Finish 2nd At High School Nationals

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Two Ohio Valley wrestlers came up a win shy of standing atop the podium at the 2025 National High School Coaches Association high school nationals Sunday.

Wheeling Park senior Jameson Maynard won his first four matches of the tournament. He earned a 11-0 major decision over Jack Cicione of New York in the Round of 32 at 182 pounds and decisioned Tyler Nieva of Connecticut 7-1 in the Round of 16. A 13-0 major nod over Utah’s Kaden Moore advanced the Patriots standout to the semifinals where he punched his ticket to the finals with a 7-4 decision of Tennessee’s Jay Eversole.

However, the OVAC and W.Va. state champion at 170 dropped a 2-1 decision to Alabama’s Cody Kirk in the finals.

At 113 pounds in the freshman division, Linsly’s Brock Humphrey’s had to win six bouts to advance to the championship match.

He started with four consecutive technical falls over North Carolina’s Stephen Cross (16-0); Virginia’s Olen Le (19-1); Connecticut’s David Linder (15-0) and Pennsylvania’s Jake Schiavone (18-0). In the quarterfinals, the OVAC champion at 106 earned a 7-1 decision over Preston Pubaugh, also from Pennsylvania; before pinning California’s Jacob Rodriguez in 2:51 in the semifinals.

However, he was blanked 8-0 in the finals by Indiana’s Noel Verduzco.
