STEUBENVILLE — Hosting New Philadelphia in the opening round of the East/Southeast District tournament, Steubenville netted 20 or more points in three of four quarters and had four players in double figures on the way to a dominant 80-46 victory inside the Crimson Center.

Steubenville, the top seed in the bracket, advances to face No. 2 seed Tri-Valley in the district semis Tuesday night at a site to be determined. The Scotties knocked off No. 4 seed Dover 53-37 in their quarterfinal game Friday night.

Bowers finished with four of Big Red’s 11 3s, tallying 14 points while also registering three rebounds and four assists. Davis hit three long-range shots and tallied 16 points to go with a team-leading seven rebounds and four assists, while Santino Haney also netted 16 points, four assists and four rebounds with a pair of steals.

Will Taylor had a big night with a game-high 25 points, hitting three triples, to go with six rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

Of Big Red’s 30 baskets, 20 were assisted on.

Steubenville Catholic 57, Strasburg 27

STEUBENVILLE — Leading by just seven at halftime of Friday night’s tournament opener against Strasburg, Catholic Central scored more points in the third quarter than it had in the entire first half on the way to pulling away for a decisive decision.

Holding a 19-12 lead through the first two quarters, the Crusaders scored 21 in the third quarter and out-paced the Tigers 38-15 in the second half.

Senior Benji Rook netted a game-high 18 points for Central, while freshman Rahim Mitchell tallied 11.

Central, the top seed in the Division VII East District bracket, advances to meet Frontier Wednesday night at a site to be determined in the district semis. The No. 3 seed Cougars topped Bridgeport in their tourney match up Friday night.

Weir 80, Madonna 56

WEIRTON – The Weir boys’ basketball team had plenty of reasons to celebrate Friday night.

Weir broke open a close game against city-rival Madonna in the third quarter as the Red Riders pulled away from the Blue Dons en route to a victory in the annual City Championship game on Ron “Fritz” Williams Court inside the Carl Hamill Fieldhouse.

Friday night was also Senior Night for Weir, and the victory enabled the Red Riders to sweep the season series from the Blue Dons.

Three players scored at least 20 points to lead the way offensively for Weir. Individually, Kaczmarek collected a game-high 26 points, Damir Mowder delivered 20 and Anthony Jeffers finished with 20.

Four players finished in double figures for the visitors. Individually, Connor Carte contributed a team-high 16 points to lead the way on offense. Also, Brayden Miller delivered 14 points, Andre Crossland tallied 13 and Reno Fuscardo recorded 11.

Weir defeated Madonna, 85-50, in the two Hancock County team’s first meeting of the season Jan. 15 inside the Dube Dome.

The boys in white got off to a good start as they were able to build a 20-13 lead at the end of the quarter. The victors extended their advantage to 38-29 entering the locker room at halftime. Weir led 57-47 entering the fourth.

Weir’s two seniors – Mowder and Jeffers – were honored before the game.

Magnolia 79, Trinity 56

NEW MARTINSVILLE – Scott Bailey led six Blue Eagles in double figures with 16 points as they cruised past the visitors.

Hunter Oates and Kingston Christen each added 14, while Dubale Greathouse had 12. Eli Midcap finished with 11 and Darin Shimp 10.
