Wheeling University Cruises to 40-16 Senior Day Win Over West Liberty
WHEELING — “The Battle for Wheeling” came to Bishop Schmidt Field on Saturday, as the Wheeling University Football team (6-5, 5-4) welcomed West Liberty University on Saturday night. It was a special senior day matchup for the Cardinals under the lights as their offense continued to soar in a 40-16 win.
The win helped the Cardinals finish 6-5 on the season, marking the fifth year in a row that they have finished at .500 or better.
The seniors shined throughout the day with Dasyn Hores and Steven Mitchell leading the way. Hores set a new career high, pulling in five catches for 121 yards and a touchdown. Mitchell let the Cardinal run game, finishing with 23 carries for 106 yards and a touchdown.
Landon Lutz would round out a strong season, finishing 14-25 throwing for 265 yards and four touchdowns on the day. His touchdowns went to three different receivers with Tre Holloway pulling in two touchdowns and Chris Charles pulling in the other. Jack Parry once again led the Cardinal defense, finishing with eight tackles and breaking the single-season tackle record with 92.
The Hilltoppers’ scores came on a Tyler Waddell 32-yard field goal and a Levi Gullion to Ben Turner 75-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Gullion hit Hunter Patterson on a screen pass that turned into a 41-yard touchdown.
With the loss the Hilltoppers finish their season at 2-9, and 2-7 in Mountain East Conference play.
