High School Roundup: Lady Patriots Blank Morgantown In OVAC Tournament Action

MORGANTOWN — Wheeling Park used goals from Julia Dunaway and Katelyn Smith, along with a solid defensive performance over 80 minutes, to shut out Morgantown, 2-0, in an OVAC Class 5A girls soccer semifinal Thursday at Pony Lewis Field.

Park (10-3-1) advances to the OVAC finals on Saturday at Red Devil Stadium in St. Clairsville, where Parkersburg South (11-0-3) awaits. South topped Steubenville, 7-0, on Thursday.

Coming off a 3-0 loss to Morgantown (10-1-1) earlier this season, Wheeling Park came out inspired, dictating play for nearly the entire first half. Park cashed in on its relentless offense when Dunaway, a junior, powered a header through Morgantown’s keepers’ hands off a corner kick from freshman Molly Bradshaw to make the score 1-0.

The second half saw Morgantown start strong, dictating play for the first 10 minutes. Wheeling Park coach Tom Smith switched formations at the half, placing Dunaway on defense, where she excelled last season. Morgantown had early scoring chances but couldn’t find the back of the net as Park’s keeper, Hailey Hastings, made several spectacular saves, while the defensive grouping of Dunaway, Lydia Riddle, Reese Moore, Harper Moore and Lakin Chambers stymied Morgantown’s attack. Park freshmen Brenna Tipton and Elli Robinson played exceptional in the midfield, keeping Morgantown’s top threats, Ariana Borneo and Ella Miller, off-balance and frustrated throughout the contest.

Wheeling Park iced the game with 22 minutes left in regulation. Smith, a senior, outran two Mohigan defenders on a through ball, slamming the ball into the top of the net to make it 2-0. Wheeling Park withstood a late Morgantown push to keep the score there and earn the victory.
