High School Roundup: Jets Keep Winning Streak Going vs. Shadyside; Red Devils Trounce Creek

WELLSVILLE – The Union Local volleyball team took its unbeaten mark on the road Wednesday night and the return trip home was a sweet one as the Jets swept the host Tigers by scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-16.

Ella Pietranton led Union Local (8-0) with seven kills, six digs, four blocks and three service aces. Laken Vinskovich added 11 kills and seven digs, while Delaney Butler had 16 assists and seven digs and Emma Yager chipped in nine digs and five kills. Alyana Logan finished with 11 assists; Brooklyn Burley eight digs; Olivia Wortman eight kills and Myah Martin eight digs.

Martins Ferry def. Bellaire 25-15, 25-12, 25-19

MARTINS FERRY – The Red Riders came through with a clean sweep against the rival Big Reds.

Lindsey Best and Nicole Hammerquist each had six kills. Best added seven digs. Giana Chirpas paced Ferry with 11 kills.

SJ Koller had 12 digs and three aces, while Olivia Harkness led the team in assists with 23 and in aces with five.

Wheeling Central def. St. Clairsville 25-12, 26-24, 25-11

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – The Maroon Knight swept the Red Devils on the road Wednesday.

Kaitlyn Blake finished with 11 kills, and 19 total service points including five aces. Helene Crall, Sydney Doyle and Remy Peters each had nine kills for Central.

The Knights’ Lainey Peters fed her teammates to the tune of 38 assists. Olivia Stephens led the team with 16 digs.

St. Clairsville 11, Indian Creek 0

WINTERSVILLE – The Red Devils bounced back from a tough loss to Weir 24 hours earlier by blanking the Redskins.

Emma Gasber and Ashlynn Lednik each had a brace, while Elizabeth Morgan added two goals and a like number of assists. Olivia McKeever chipped in a goal and three helpers, while Kaylee Shafer added a goal and two assists.

Bella Cunningham had a goal. Maxim Lussier and Isabella Yeager each had an assist and Kiya Kyer recorded the shutout.

John Marshall Wins Four Matches

WHEELING – The Monarchs claimed four victories Wednesday at the par-36 Crispin Golf Course with a team total of 201. Wheeling Central was second with 210, followed by University (214), Wheeling Park (222) and Brooke (227).

Jocelyn Blatt and Alexis Thayer both carded a 48 for John Marshall, while Peyton Jones was one shot back. Morgan Messner rounded out the scoring with a 56.

The Maroon Knights were led by Maddie Potts with a 45. Olivia Blatt and Kaila Blatt each shot 50, while Annabella Blatt had a 65.

Abby Thomas paced the Patriots with a 51, two shots better than Alicia Harvath and six ahead of Carter Kidd. Ella Wheeler had a 61.

Ellie McDonald led the Bruins with a 48.

University’s Abby Kingora was medalist with a 42.

Buckeye Local Rolls

TORONTO – The Panthers improved to a sparkling 18-1 Wednesday with a triangular match win over Shadyside and the host Red Knights. Buckeye Local shot 185, seven shots better than the Tigers and 12 ahead of Toronto at Dyer Country Club.

Shadyside’s Brandon O’Grady earned medalist honors with a 40. Buckeye Local’s Dom Kempton was second at 43. Kaleb Stang added a 45, while John Frank carded a 48.

Hank Bodnar had a 49 for the Red Knights.

Wheeling Central Defeats Harrison Central

WHEELING – The Maroon Knights took care of business against the visiting Huskies, turning in a 2-0 shutout victory.

Tino Sperlazza picked up the win in goal with three saves.

Mason Schmitt and Linkan Marler each scored for Wheeling Central, while Matt Criniti and Maddox Ochap each assisted.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – It was a shutout 3-0 victory for the Red Devils at home against the Jets.

Carson Hendershot, Jonathan Verardi and Brennen Rice scored for St. Clairsville, while Lucas Causey and James Parson each had assists.
