World-class Cardiovascular Care is Closer Than You Think
When you or a loved one are faced with a cardiovascular health emergency, the last thing you want to do is travel to another city. At the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI), Wheeling residents can find top of the line cardiovascular care in their own backyard.
The WVU Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI) is a service line approach to the delivery of cardiovascular healthcare throughout the state of West Virginia. With a locations at WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital, WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital, and Wetzel County Hospital, the Heart and Vascular Institute provides high quality services to residents across the Ohio Valley.
Because the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute is an academic health institution and funded by the National Institute of Health, they have access to the latest clinical trials and cutting-edge research.
We spoke with Dr. David Campsey, Chief of Cardiology at WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital, about their service offerings and exciting new expansions. In addition to his administrative position, Dr. Campsey is also a practicing cardiologist.
“I perform cardiac interventions such as pacemakers, loop insertion, stents, and cardiac catheterizations,” says Dr. Campsey. He also performs a variety of structural interventions for closure of atrial septal defect, patent foramen ovale, and left atrial appendage. Dr. Campsey also participates in the on-call schedule for cardiac emergencies like heart attacks and pulmonary embolisms.
WVU Heart and Vascular Institute provides a full spectrum of heart, lung, and vascular services. With state-of-the-art technology and advanced diagnostic tools, their board-certified cardiologists work with patients and their primary care physicians to ensure a team approach to coordinated care.
The services that WVU HVI offers include cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation, electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, non-invasive cardiology, a structural heart disease program, and their advanced heart failure program.
“We are performing structural procedures such as TAVR and Mitral edge to edge repair at Wheeling Hospital. We also perform cardiac surgery for bypass surgery, valve repair and replacement,” says Dr. Campsey. He goes on to mention that the department also performs vascular surgery and thoracic surgery.
“I see everything cardiac related. Most commonly, coronary artery disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, hypertension and dyslipidemia,” says Dr. Campsey. Heart failure is one of the top cardiac related reasons that residents of West Virginia are admitted to the hospital. WVU HVI’s team of physicians, pharmacists, nurses, exercise physiologists, social workers, and dieticians work together to create a treatment and prevention plan to slow the progression of heart disease and prevent readmission.
For patients who have experienced a cardiac emergency or procedure, WVU HVI’s Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation program works to help patients return to their daily lives with a plan for exercise and lifestyle modifications.
