JAMES “JAY” BYRUM JR.

James “Jay” Alexander Byrum Jr., 78, of Wheeling, WV, died in the Wheeling Hospital on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.

He was born August 30, 1946, in Wheeling, WV, the son of the late Gloria Reed Byrum and James Alexander Byrum, Sr.

James received a B.A. degree in Government from Cornell University and a J.D. from West Virginia University College of Law. He was admitted to the bar in West Virginia in 1975. During his years as a practicing lawyer, James was an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, 1977-1980 and 1985-1987, and a member of the Ohio County, West Virginia, and American Bar Associations. He was at various times a member of the Board of Directors, Secretary, and President of West Virginia Legal Services Plan, Inc.

James served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1969-1972.

Jay was a former member of the Board of Directors for The House of the Carpenter. He was a Presbyterian by faith. Jay was also a dedicated sports fan, especially as a Pittsburgh Steelers season ticket holder for decades.

In addition to his parents, Jay was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Lee Byrum, and his brother, Reed Bolton Byrum.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Peterson Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, who cared so much for Jay during his time there.

A celebration of life will occur with details to be determined. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made in the name of James Byrum to The House of the Carpenter or the WVU Reed School of Media and Communications.
