MELVIN STEPHENS SR.
Melvin Clyde Stephens, Sr., an Episcopalian by faith, born on June 18, 1933, in Wheeling, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2024, at Liza’s Place – Valley Hospice Care Center South. He was 90 years old.
Melvin dedicated over 37 years of his life working as a Clerk for the United States Postal Service, where his dedication and commitment were evident to all who knew him. A true pillar of his community, he was an avid coach, imparting his passion and knowledge of sports to countless young athletes. He coached Wheeling’s Midget League Baseball and Madison Elementary’s 5th & 6th Grade Basketball team, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of many young players.
A devoted family man, Melvin enjoyed a remarkable 71 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Darlene (Cameron) Stephens. Together, they raised their five children: Melvin (Mary Ann) Stephens Jr., Randy Stephens Sr., Timothy (Kristine) Stephens, Michael Stephens and Jennifer (Bill) Wagner. He was also a cherished grandfather to 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, and a loving uncle to several nieces and nephews. His loyal canine companion, Sophie, brought him much joy in his later years.
Melvin was a proud Corporal in the United States Army, serving his country with honor. In his leisure time, he was known for his unwavering support as a Pittsburgh Pirates fan. His social engagements included active memberships in the Cave Club, Snake Club, and the Wheeling Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Freda (Baker) Stephens; his beloved son, Michael “Gooch” Stephens (2021); his dear grandson, Randy Stephens, Jr. (2013); and his siblings, Verneda, Norma, Anna, Wally, and John. Melvin leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and community service that will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2024, from 1:00 PM until the time of service at 7:00 PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling, WV. The service will be officiated by Father Richard Skaggs, Celebrant.
