State Sen. Michael Maroney Arrested Again

Michael Maroney

McMECHEN – State Sen. Michael Maroney, already facing charges of indecent exposure and disorderly conduct from an August incident, was arrested again Monday evening on a trio of misdemeanors.

According to the West Virginia Regional Jail Authority website, Maroney was booked into Northern Regional Jail just after 5 p.m. Monday on three misdemeanors — control of vehicle under the influence, no registration and expired registration.

According to a news release from McMechen Police Chief Robert Shilling, Maroney was driving within the McMechen city limits when city police officers pulled him over after he allegedly committed “numerous traffic infractions.”

Upon conclusion of the roadside investigation, Shilling said Maroney was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He added that Maroney was cooperative with the police investigation.

This was Maroney’s second arrest in little more than a month. He was arrested on Aug. 13 on charges of indecent exposure and disorderly conduct, accused of “an overt act of sexual gratification” in the video lottery room at Gumby’s in Glen Dale.

According to the criminal complaint of that arrest, Maroney was allegedly seen touching himself on Aug. 4 in the video lottery room on closed circuit cameras by two Gumby’s employees. Maroney denied the allegations to Glen Dale Police Chief Ed Vogler and allegedly said he would leave if he finished his game.

Later, when Vogler talked to the employees, they showed him the surveillance video of him allegedly touching himself.

Following that arrest, Senate President Craig Blair, R-Berkeley, removed Maroney as chairman of the Senate Committee on Health and Human Resources and relieved him of all other committee responsibilities to “give him appropriate time to dedicate to his personal issues.”

Maroney, a Marshall County Republican, was first elected to his state Senate in 2016 and re-elected in 2020. He was defeated in the 2024 primary by Monongalia County resident Chris Rose, and his current term will end Dec. 31.

A pre-trial hearing on those charges scheduled for Thursday has been continued to Nov. 15 at 2:15 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
