WHEELING - Seeing the Debbie Green 5K Race listed alongside road races in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix gives Race Director Ron Green pride in knowing the local event gains national attention.
According to the website BestRoadRaces.com, the Debbie Green race ranks as the 253rd best road race in the world. The ratings include races of all lengths and types.
"I was surprised to see that," Green said. "It is truly an honor to even be on a list like that. You are talking about some major events there. What an elite group."
Green wasn't exactly sure of the qualifications to earn a spot on the list, which includes world-known events such as the Boston Marathon, New York City Marathon and the Atlanta Marathon.
"There were very few 5Ks on the list, so to be mentioned in the same breath as the Boston Marathon is just unbelievable," Green said.
Some of the factors considered include talent, entry fee, how much is given back to the participants and other aspects.
Green said his race normally draws anywhere from 1,350 to 1,400 participants, adding he draws runners from around the globe.
"We've had someone from every state except Hawaii," he said. "Just this year, we got someone from Oregon, giving us 49 out of 50 states."
Green said he appreciates the recognition, but emphasized that it "is not about me."
"I am just thrilled for my staff and for the city of Wheeling. This is a total team effort," he said.
