WHEELING - With a growing number of repeat clientele and a lot of positive word-of-mouth support, the Jeweled Bird is becoming a destination store in Wheeling.

Located at 136 Edgwood St., in the former Missionary Alliance Church building, the Jeweled Bird is a unique shop offering array of vintage and modern furniture and a fine jewelry shop with a line of items ranging in price from $20 to $1,000.

The store's name is a reflection of owner Joan L. Berlow Smith's personal passion.

"I love nature, and birds and things that sparkle," she said.

Smith enjoys talking about the building as much as she loves the products it houses.

With its intact arched, stained-glass windows as primary focal points, the building is the epitome of the phrase re-purposing. Over the years, it has been transformed from a church to a private residence and then to its present form as an elegant gift shop.

Immediately upon entering, visitors are embraced by the ambiance of a resort gift shop, rather than a local store nestled within a quiet residential neighborhood.

"We offer a great line of vintage and modern furniture," Smith said. "Along with artwork, paintings, lamps and giftware from around the world and by local artists."

She said the shop has become a destination place because new products are offered every week.

"We have a changing inventory so our customers can see new things and feel a new experience every time they come back," she said.

The business also has bridal and baby gift registries, decorating design consultation, gift certificates and shipping for out-of-town customers.

Samual Posin, who has more than 40 years in the jewelry business, said his department features fashion and fine jewelry.

We have an amazing selection of diamonds, gem stones, gold, silver and pearls," he said. "We work with the finest designers in New York and our product line is constantly changing to reflect that."
