Witzberger’s One Expectation: Must Compete Every Inning

CAMERON - Cameron softball coach Mark Witzberger has one simple expectation for the Dragons this year: The girls must compete in every inning of every game.

"Wins and losses will take care of themselves if this happens," Witzberger said.

After a 17-8 season, the team, also coached by Roger Cain and Jonelle Campbell, will be counting largely on the strength of its pitching.

Leading the team so far are returning captains senior Natalie Trowbridge and junior Linda Hall.

Starting pitcher Hall, who was a second team all-state player last year after batting .382 with five home runs and 23 RBI, as well as a team-leading 26 runs, will be returning and will be backed up by freshman Lindsay Paczewski.

The catching position has Paczewski as a frontrunner along with senior Courtney Gouldsberry looking for time behind the plate.

Leading the way for the first base position is sophomore Marissa Meintel (26 hits, 23 runs, team-leading 27 RBI in 2013), who is being pushed by sophomore Jenna Aston and freshmen Layne Neely and Erika Whipkey.

Second base will most likely be decided upon after a couple other positions are filled. Several players are vying for the spot, including returning starting outfielder senior Lexi Aston and Gouldsberry, as well as sophomore Grace Fitzgerald.

Natalie Trowbridge will return at third base. Looking to back her up are sophomores Hope Wise and Jenna Aston.

Depending on whether returners Bailey Wood or Lexi Aston move into the infield will determine how many new outfield spots will be open. Contenders are sophomores Grace Fitzgerald, Morgan Goode, and Hope Wise, and freshmen Paczewski, Neely, Erika Whipkey, and Jasmine Jasenec.

Looking to make the varsity squad and add depth are utility players infielder/ outfielder Alexis Booth, pitcher/infielder Farrah Whipkey, catcher Meleigha Harmon, and outfielder Taylor Winland.
