Dear Readers

I recently visited The Birth Place at East Ohio Regional Hospital, where my daughter, Emma, was born almost eight years ago. Walking into the room next door to where I gave birth triggered a flood of emotions, all of which I kept to myself as I was there on official business (see "What Is a Baby-Friendly Hospital" story on page 25).

But as I thought about what to write in this space I decided to indulge myself in a trip down Labor Lane in the hope it might give pregnant or brand new moms - and dads - reading this a sense that what they are feeling is normal and they are not alone. Here are some things I remember feeling.

I just want you to know that childbirth, no matter how it goes down - drugged, "natural," C-section, vaginal - is a frightening and gratifying experience. It is very hard work. And I know you'll be amazing!
