STEUBENVILLE - It was an up-and-down day for the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference on Saturday at the Ohio Division II Eastern District swimming sectionals.
Dover took home both the boys' and girls' overall titles, while the top local teams were Barnesville (third on the female side) and St. Clairsville and Steubenville Catholic, which finished fourth and fifth, respectively, on the male side of the ledger.
The Martins Ferry girls, who came home fourth, had the area's lone individual champion in freshman Alyssa Kalinski, who won the 200-yard individual medley and the 200to qualify for Friday's District Tournament at Ohio State. Cambridge's Lindsey Nunamaker (2:29.50) finished second in the event, while St. Clairsville's Delainey Banks (2:35.71) ended fifth. Kalinski also finished second in the 500 Freestyle in a time of 5:25.59.
The Purple Riders' Tara Fogle, a sophomore, was second in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:09.33, while Barnesville's Kasi Castello came home fourth in a time of 1:10.04. Fogle was also fifth in the 100 Backstroke in 1:09.31.
Other top girls' performances were put forth by Castello (third), Steubenville's Allie Zmish (fourth) and Hannah Stillions (fifth) of Cambridge in the 50 Free. St. Clairsville's Alaina Fasola and Nunamaker finished three and five in the 100 Free, while the Red Devils' 200 Freestyle Relay team of Fasola, Hanna Vera, Banks and Carly Falcone finished fourth in a time of 1:52.90.
Steubenville Catholic's Maddy Gulan was fourth in the 100 Backstroke (1:08.89). Martins Ferry (Shelby Poludniak, Kalinski, Fogle and Abbey Ecker) and Cambridge (Taylor Alten, Nunamaker, Isabel Charlton and Hannah Stillions) were second and third, respectively, in 200 Medley Relay.
On the boys' side, it took a pool-record time of of 48.70 from Dover's Frannie Brogan to beat St. Clairsville standout Michael Eaton, who finished in 49.02 in the 100 Freestyle. Eaton was also a part of the Red Devils' 200 Medley Relay team, along with Christopher Blackwell, Douglas Beck and Dylan Krone, that finished third, and the 200 Freestyle Relay squad that wound up fourth and also included Haydn Lewis, Blackwell and Beck. Steubenville Catholic (Jacob Arai, Joey Schlich, Brien Thompson and Anthony Lee) ended up fifth in the race.
Other top boys' performances were turned in by Anthony (fifth in 200 Free), Schlich (fourth in 200 IM), Beaver Local's Hayden Moore (fourth 50 Free), Arau (fifth in 100 Butterfly) and Martins Ferry's Brandon Bliss (fourth in 500 Free).
