Eugene "Gene" Simmons Jr. usually doesn't see much excitement in his job as a toll booth attendant at the Newell Bridge. But Simmons, 79, of East Liverpool is an observant man.
So when a woman asked him about walking across the bridge at about 3:40 a.m. Saturday, Simmons became suspicious. He watched closely as she walked out on the span, looking over the side.
Simmons called his company's security office, telling an officer he thought the woman was preparing to jump from the bridge into the Ohio River.
Then she did.
Had Simmons not been alert, the woman's plunge might not have been noticed. As it was, emergency crews pulled her from the river within minutes.
Simmons may have saved her life. For that, he deserves to be commended.
