MOUNDSVILLE - Marshall County ushered in the Christmas season Saturday afternoon as hundreds of parade participants took part in the 44th annual parade arranged by the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber Executive Director Dave Knuth and members of the parade committee were very pleased with the event which they said attracted one of the largest crowds ever.

Although the sun came out briefly a couple times, for the most part it was a brisk afternoon with snow flurries appearing on and off.

The one-hour parade covered an eight block area, six of which were on Jefferson Avenue and the other two on Second Street.

There was one change from previous years, as the parade started at Eighth Street and Jefferson Avenue and proceeded north along Jefferson Avenue to Second Street. In past years the parade had started in the vicinity of Second Street and Jefferson Avenue and proceeded south.

There were 85 parade units, 21 of which were floats.

The parade marshal was Susie Baker who spearheads the annual Marshall Back To School Fun Fair.

Floats entered by non-profit organizations and churches were eligible for judging with the judges selecting the Ash Avenue Church of God, Moundsville, for first place, the Barn Bums of Fork Ridge, second, and the McMechen First Church of God, third.

The first place float offered a seasonal message complete with a live nativity scene, large white angel and star in its design,

The parade was videotaped by students in John Marshall High School's WJMH Media Class and will be shown at dates to be announced on West Liberty University's Channel 14 through Dec. 26.

Sponsors of the parade included Williams Ohio Valley Midsteam, the Marshall County Commission, the City of Moundsville, the Marshall County Green Tab, WTRF-TV and Chesapeake Energy.
