Thanks to all for a great event, the Veterans Day 10K race/walk was again a great success. First of all, thanks to our major sponsors, Progressive Bank, Ohio Valley Hospice, and the Ohio County Commission who cover 90 per cent of all expenses and have made it possible to donate well over $50,000 to the Paralyzed Veterans in the four-year history of the race.
To the numerous donors who donated materials and money. Also the volunteers who contribute their time such as the Girl Scouts and 4H members who man the aid stations, the American Legion Post No. 1 who do the registration, and the special needs students at Wheeling Park High School who pack the race packets and do the mailings.
The residents of Wheeling should be proud of themselves for the support they gave the race participants along the course.
The City of Wheeling Administration, including the police department, the fire department and maintenance department are to be commended for all they do to make the 10K a success.
This year there were over 600 registrants for the race, including over 200 veterans. There were participants from as far away as Alaska who commented on the friendliness and support the people of Wheeling gave them.
To our distinguished guest, Sgt. Major Lee D. Bonar Jr. who, at the finish line, shook the hand of each and every finisher.
Last, but not least, to the race committee itself which makes the race the well organized event that it is. Some of the members have been on our race committee for over 30 years and their expertise is quite evident in the smoothness with which the race operated.
Again, heartfelt thanks to all who contributed in any way to making the race the success that it is.
