Water Customers Targeted

November 16, 2013
By FRED CONNORS - Senior Staff Writer , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Three Wheeling businesses were the target of a potential scam after a man claiming to be with the Wheeling Water Department threatened water shutoffs unless they paid their bill immediately.

A Wheeling police report shows the business owners called the city Water Department to report a suspicious call from a man who said water would be shut off unless water bills were paid immediately over the phone by credit or debit card.

According to the report, the business owners said the caller was a male with a foreign accent. He identified himself as John Miller.

The report indicates the Wheeling Water Department does not have an employee named John Miller.

It noted that water department employees do make calls to customers regarding delinquent water bills and anybody concerned about the validity of such calls should call the water department at 304-234-3726.
