An ATV accident that claimed the life of a Marshall County man early Wednesday was a "tragic accident," investigators believe.
Marshall County Sheriff Kevin Cecil said deputies responded to the accident about four miles out on Birch Ridge. He said the driver, who has not been identified, was hauling lumber on the back of the ATV when the accident occurred.
Cecil said it appears that the ATV malfunctioned, causing the throttle to stick. The man and the bike went over an embankment and struck a pine tree, which threw both onto a paved road. The man suffered fatal injuries from the impact, and Cecil said he was not wearing a helmet.
The investigation was ongoing Wednesday, though Cecil said nothing appears suspicious about the accident.
"This is just a tragic accident," he said. "He wasn't messing around, he wasn't speeding, it just happened."
