TORONTO - This year's Gem City Day celebration on July 6 will feature the Mike Shuma Healthy Heart 5K Run/Walk.
The running event begins at 8:30 a.m. and walkers at 8:35 a.m. Both start at Toronto High School's stadium. Registration and packet pickup is 7-8:15 a.m.
Mike Biasi, one of the race's organizers, said Shuma died May 19, 2012, at age 42. He described Shuma as an avid outdoorsman, a commentator on the local radio show Ohio Valley Game Night and a lifelong resident of Toronto.
"Mike left us far too early and is missed by all. He passed away from a heart attack. He did have family history of heart troubles. We are trying to raise awareness of heart disease and help those patients who have had a heart attack by providing access to the YMCA in Steubenville so they can continue their rehabilitation," Biasi said. "We also will help the Mended Hearts program, which visits heart patients and also makes pillows for those who have had open heart surgery."
The race will award medals for first, second and third place overall for men and women. There are medals for the first two finishers of each gender in each age group and medals for the top five walkers on the men's and women's race course.
The course consists of relatively flat roads through historic Toronto. The finish line is inside Clark Hinkle Stadium. People can register the day of the event or online at www.getmeregistered.com. For more information, call 740-537-2152 or email Biasi at firstname.lastname@example.org. Free T-shirts are given to the first 200 people registered.
The city's day-long celebration will end with a fireworks display in Clarke Hinkle Stadium.
