Monday, May 27 is Memorial Day. This day is set aside to honor our veterans and those who have given their lives to preserve the freedoms we enjoy every day in the United States.
In McMechen, Memorial Day services and the parade will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the War Memorial in front of McMechen Elementary School. American Legion Auxiliary, Mountain Knapp Unit 5, will again sponsor four restored military Jeeps: two from World War II, owned by Doug Tschappat and Greg Burke; one from the Korean War with a .50-caliber machine gun mounted on the rear, owned by Rusty Jebbia, and one from the Vietnam War era, owned by Dan Walton.
The Jeeps will be positioned in front of the school 30-45 minutes before everything begins to give our veterans and the public a chance to get an up close look and take pictures. Unit 5 is seeking anyone with military vehicles, antique cars and any groups (adult or children) who we can sponsor and would like to be a part of the parade. Call 304-559-7878 for more information.
