JMHS Student Charged in Fatal Crash

By J.W. JOHNSON JR. Marshall County Bureau Chief , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

MOUNDSVILLE - An 18-year-old John Marshall High School student is facing a charge of DUI causing death after an incident early Saturday morning in rural Marshall County.

According to Marshall County Sheriff Kevin Cecil, deputies responded to an accident just after 2 a.m. Saturday on McCrearys Ridge Road. Cecil said the driver, Logan Christman, 18, of Benwood, was driving and lost control navigating a turn, striking the hillside and rolling the vehicle. The passenger, Kenneth King, 19, of Wheeling, was ejected from the truck.

"The vehicle rolled on top of him, and he did not survive that accident," Cecil said, adding King was pronounced dead at the scene.

Christman, a student at John Marshall, was taken to Wheeling Hospital to be treated for injuries. Cecil said Christman briefly spoke with deputies at the scene, and a blood sample was taken later at the hospital. Cecil said that sample was sent to the West Virginia State Police for analysis.

Cecil said the DUI with death charge was issued as a citation, and Christman has not yet been arraigned. He said Marshall County Prosecutor Jeff Cramer was expected to review the case today and decide how to proceed.

"He will determine if there will be any further charges and what we do next," Cecil said.

In the meantime, Cecil said deputies are still unsure how the teens got alcohol, and an investigation will continue to find a source.

"Where this happened is pretty rural, " he said. "There are any number of places they could have gotten it, but we are still not sure."
