WHEELING - As the weather continues to warm, Ohio Valley residents will start perusing their local nurseries and stores for just the right plants and elements to make their gardens beautiful.

In addition to flowers, green-thumb gardeners like to discover the latest accessories to add a bit of whimsy to their landscapes.

For example, at Lowe's in Wheeling, Lab Nursery Specialist Chad Hutkay said his store is offering new fountains that can be used in a garden or on a deck or porch. One longtime favorite, he noted, is a two-tiered fountain with a faux stone appearance.

Whimsical statues such as these animals also appeal to gardeners.

"It creates a cascade of water," he said. "It's a good seller for us. It has a collection pond on the bottom and a pool on the top. It gives you that sound, that ambiance."

In addition to decorative items, Lowe's continues to offer a variety of pre-bagged mulches and stone for the do-it-yourselfer. He said one popular mulch is cedar that breaks down naturally and helps repels insects.

There are a variety of landscaping rocks to choose from including lava rock and marble chips. A newer and increasingly popular choice is river stone, which Hutkay said is a little more difficult to spread but lasts longer than most landscaping rocks.

In terms of soils and fertilizers, the trend toward organic is on the rise as people become more conscious about what they are putting into the environment and exposing themselves to in terms of chemicals, pesticides and other elements.

Hutkay noted the Lowe's website,, often sells items not available in all stores.

Some online items can be shipped to a store.

He said those interested in an item may want to call the store at 304-238-2000 to make sure it is in stock.
