STEUBENVILLE - Steubenville Catholic used a big fifth inning to break open a 3-1 game at Vaccaro Field on Tuesday as the Crusaders claimed a 8-3 victory against Wheeling Central in prep basseball action.
Though Steubenville Catholic (8-3) was hitless through the game's first three innings, the Crusaders still held a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth.
That's when Micheal Barber gave the hosts their first run and the Crusaders carried that momentum into the fifth as Brenton Colabella drove in Chris Murphy followed by a Stone Romano hit and a Aleks Porreca walk that loaded the bases.
Kyle Laukert sent Colabella and Romano home with a base knock, and Merrimman matched him with a two-run base hit of his own that plated Porreca and Laukert to give Steubenville Catholic an 8-1 lead.
Wheeling Central received an RBI single from J. D. Griffith in the sixth before he scored a run of his own in the seventh as the teams reached the final decision.
