Local teachers who demonstrate exceptional enthusiasm and dedication were honored Friday at the annual Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce 2013 Partners in Education luncheon at West Virginia Northern Community College.
Every year, the chamber's Education Committee recognizes teachers from private, public and parochial schools in the local area and also awards two deserving high school seniors with scholarships from the chamber and Williams Lea. This was the first year that the committee also honored teachers from Marshall County Schools.
John Culler, immediate past chairman of the chamber executive committee, announced each teacher of the year for Ohio County, citing his or her accomplishments and unique teaching style.
Those award winners were Lynette Pellarin of Steenrod Elementary School, Richard Thomas of Bridge Street Middle School, Wilma Beaver of Wheeling Central Catholic High School and Maureen Kerr of Our Lady of Peace School.
David Knuth, executive director of the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce, announced the teachers of the year for Marshall County.
Recipients included Joann Neal of Glen Dale Elementary, Eleanor Nickras of Moundsville Middle School and Gerald Pockl of John Marshall High School.
According to Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce President Terry Sterling, teachers of the year are nominated by their principals based on the teachers' community involvement and the quality of their work with students.
Recipients of the college scholarships were Elizabeth Potts, a senior at Bishop Donahue Catholic High School, and Megan Randolph, a senior at Wheeling Park High School.
The scholarships were awarded based on the students' community service experience as well as their in-school and extracurricular activities.
"We have some great educators. They really care, and they're great with their students," Sterling said. "You can see the quality of the students that won our scholarship, and they go on to do some really great things over the years. We're very proud to do this, and it's one of our major programs that we do at the chamber."
