An Ohio County sheriff's deputy arrested Travis Hogle for felony child neglect Wednesday after Hogle allegedly fractured his 5-month-old son's leg following an argument with the boy's mother.
Magistrate Patty Murphy arraigned Hogle on Thursday on a charge of child neglect resulting in injury. Hogle, 21, of Wheeling, had yet to post $15,000 cash bond late Thursday and remained in the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville.
According to court documents, Hogle and his girlfriend, Brittany Cooey, had been arguing at their residence on Peter's Run Road around 3 a.m. Wednesday. The pair separated, with Hogle in the living room while Cooey remained in the bedroom with their son, who was in his crib.
The report states the child had been crying. When Hogle walked into the bedroom to check on his son, he found Cooey sitting on the bed talking on her cell phone.
Hogle then allegedly grabbed the baby by the ankle and flipped him onto his stomach. The boy reportedly cried for a little bit longer before falling asleep.
Hogle met with a sheriff's deputy and a Child Protective Services supervisor at the sheriff's department later that day after the boy was hospitalized with a fractured leg. Hogle reportedly said he did not realize at the time that he had injured his son. He admitted that he was still angry from the argument with Cooey when he grabbed the boy by his ankle.
"I used excessive force when I flipped him over," Hogle reportedly told the deputy.
A preliminary hearing in front of Magistrate Harry Radcliffe had not yet been scheduled Thursday, nor had Hogle informed the court if he had hired an attorney to represent him.
