GLEN DALE - With numbers and enthusiasm both up for John Marshall's boys' and girls' track teams, Coaches Jason Willis and Ray Anderson are hoping for the pieces of the puzzle to come together quickly and for their Monarchs to gel.
Anderson's boys' roster will include 42 members, including 14 freshmen that are bringing excitement, while the girls have 27 athletes on their side.
The boys will be led by a seven member senior class that includes Guy Armstrong (distance), Zach Conner (mid-distance), Jordan Ferris (sprints), Justin Horan (sprints, relays), Joey Richmond (shot put, discus), Robert Yoho (shot put, discus) and Tyler Neehouse (sprints).
A huge junior class includes Randy Bane (shot put, discus), Alex Brown (distance), John Burt (shot put, discus, sprints), Braden Carter (shot put, discus), Braden Carter (shot put, discus), Reed Campbell (mid-distance), Kenny Corley (sprints), Michael Conner (pole vault, distance), Alan Miller (shuttles, shot put, discus), Tanner Runkle (hurdles, relays), Andrew Wanat (sprints), Collin Stipetich (pole vault, 1,600), CJ Vega (sprints, shuttles, relays), Cole Crogan (shot put, discus), Ethan Springer (shot put, discus), Logan Landis (mid-distance), Cole Wolfe (400, relays).
Sophomores are Dallas Catlett (shot put, discus), Landon Hall (pole vault, distance), Trent Estep (shot put, discus), Ethan Hazlett (distance) and Jonathan Taylor (sprints, relays).
Incoming freshmen are Zeke Andrews (shot put, discus), Kenny Brannan (sprints), Luke Bonar (sprints), Kyle Caruso (sprints), Nicholas Cecil (hurdles), Hunter Lockhart (sprints), Andrew McGlynn (sprints), Dylan McKeag (mid-distance, distance), Ryan Patrick (sprints), Jacob Pifko (sprints), Chase Richmond (sprints), Ken Wu (sprints), Tim Sampson (sprints) and Clay Thorn (mid-distance).
The girls' team begin life without consistent state qualifier and placer Alexis Montes, who took third in the discus and fourth in the shot put in Charleston her senior season. But they do return one state placer in senior Ashley Haught, who finished seventh in the 400-meter dash a year ago.
Haught will also be a relay specialist, as will her sister, Erica, who will also run the 400 and 800. Other seniors include Karissa Duke (distance, relays), Candace Kesselring (distance), Nicole Nuce (400, relays), Shelby Pell (hurdles), Autumn Shultz (pole vault) and Alexa Beatty (shot put, discus).
A small junior class has Emily Winters (shot put, discus), Hailee McClelland (hurdles) and Chasta Proctor (sprints) while the sophomores are Alison Duke (hurdles, sprints), Alyssa Eddy (sprints, pole vault, long jump), Kelsey Gump (shot put, discus), Valerie Moore (long jump, sprints), Ashton Thompson (hurdles) and Aleasha Yoho (pole vault, long jump, sprints).
Freshmen are Cassidy Brown (sprints), Morgan Butler (sprints), Alek Coss (distance), Erica Davis (hurdles, sprints), Tori Derrow (hurdles, sprints, high jump), Macey Lindner (sprints, relays), Jaimi McNeil (sprints, relays), Madison Truex (sprints, relays), Hanna Walker (hurdles, relays) and Madelynn Wood (shot put, discus, 800).
''The kids have been working very hard despite the poor weather conditions and we are excited about getting some meets under our belts and getting all the pieces put together for what should be competitive teams,'' Willis said.
