March 15, 2013
By J.W. JOHNSON JR. Marshall County Bureau Chief , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

An inmate at the Northern Regional Jail allegedly struck a corrections officer in the head and torso with a chair last month.

According to documents from Marshall County Magistrate Court, inmate Karl P. Anderson, 44, was charged with unlawful assault for the incident, which allegedly took place late last month at the jail in Moundsville. The criminal complaint states on Feb. 26, troopers with the West Virginia State Police were called to the jail for an altercation between an officer and an inmate.

The corrections officer said he instructed Anderson to keep his cell door closed, prompting Anderson to approach the officer, who was standing behind a podium. Anderson allegedly picked up a chair and swung it at the officer, hitting him in the head and torso. Anderson then allegedly dropped the chair and began swinging his fists at the officer, who was able to wrestle Anderson to the ground and restrain him.

The officer told investigators he felt his safety was in jeopardy, "especially since (Anderson) was targeting his head with a chair." Investigators noticed a bruise on the officer's cheek and reviewed the incident via surveillance video. The investigator noted in the complaint that the incident occurred exactly as described by the corrections officer.

Anderson was arraigned on the charge March 8, and bond was set at $7,500 by Marshall County Magistrate Dave McLaughlin. A Monday preliminary hearing is set.

According to the West Virginia Division of Corrections website, Anderson was incarcerated on a conviction on charges of second-offense possession of Ephedrine Pseudoephedrine, operating or attempting to operate clandestine drug laboratories and possession of precursor to manufacture methamphetamine from 2008 out of Ohio County. He has a projected release date of April 2023.
