Providing the city of Wheeling can get a good price for its Operations Center in the Clator neighborhood, selling it would be a good idea.
Mayor Andy McKenzie said this week he will ask City Council to approve sale of the property and relocation of the Operations Center.
As McKenzie pointed out, the Operations Center, just off Interstate 70 at the Wheeling Hospital exit, "is prime real estate for development." Making it available could generate "new development and investment in our city," the mayor added.
A similar idea was proposed just a few years ago, but the city did not receive acceptable offers for purchase of the property. But times have changed, and it is possible the land may be attractive to a job creator.
That said, Wheeling taxpayers cannot afford to take a loss on such a transaction. Enough money to cover re-establishing the Operations Center elsewhere would have to be received.
Council should authorize City Manager Robert Herron to look into the possibilities of such a deal.
