It Takes a New Attitude to Get Healthy

It's been about two months since the ball dropped on a new year and you've yet to make it to the gym. Or you've continued to eat foods you know aren't healthy.

The good thing is that it doesn't take a new year to get healthy - just a new attitude. Just because you slipped up on the progress with those resolutions thus far doesn't mean you have to stop now. It's never a bad time to get things in order to lead a healthy lifestyle.

If you start paying attention around the Ohio Valley, many new places are opening up to help make putting forth the effort a little more convenient. From Zumba to yoga and Crossfit, a lot of classes are beginning to pop up, which add an aspect of fun into those sometimes nagging workouts.

One local gym owner, Justin Green of the Source Fitness Center in St. Clairsville, pointed out just starting an exercise regimen is the key.

"What most people don't understand is that just by taking action and getting to the gym is a huge step. Once you get there it becomes very contagious," Green pointed out.

The thought of diets and exercise just pain people, because they are misled that it's so hard to do. By no means is it easy, but just paying attention and making an attempt goes a long way, he said.

"Fitness is very simple if you have the right knowledge. Too much information is bad! Quit picking up the magazines and reading a million different concepts. Find a credible source that is simple to follow and don't stray from it," Green said.

While things are becoming more innovative to make tasks easier and easier, the art of being healthy won't ever change. Get active. Eat healthy. It's that simple.

The federal government has put in place guidelines and resources to help people get healthy. It's recommended that a person take part in 150 minutes of physical activity a week. To break that down, that's 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

Under the suggested physical activity there are a lot of ideas you might never consider part of that 150 minutes. Of course, traditional brisk walking, jogging, push ups, sit ups, and free weights would top the list.

Others might overlook outside work, such as raking leaves, shoveling dirt, splitting and moving firewood, even heavy gardening.

Often people look at physical activity as a long, drawn-out block of time just disappearing in the middle of the day, when it already seems like there isn't enough time to accomplish everything.

Others may look into programs set up in many of the local gyms and studios. If you have the time and a little extra cash, a personal trainer might be able to offer that jump start to get you back on track with some new ideas and encouragement. Look into some local offerings with a friend, and choose according to your fitness needs.

"When starting a new lifestyle it's always good to have a support system in place. Find a friend that wants to make the changes you do, and make each other accountable. If you are going to hire a trainer, make sure you look at your trainer and what they are practicing," Green added.

Swimming is another way to get fit. Options include Four Seasons Pool in Moundsville and the J.B. Chambers YMCA in Wheeling where fitness-minded individuals can go for a swim during the winter months.
