The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

WEST LIBERTY - No. 3-ranked West Liberty overcame a rare halftime deficit Monday night and ran away to a 113-103 victory against upset-minded Shepherd in West Virginia Conference men's basketball action at the ASRC.

Coach Jim Crutchfield's Hilltoppers (25-1 overall, 19-1 WVC) battled the Rams (14-11, 11-10) on virtually even terms for most of the night before taking control over the final six minutes.

The Hilltoppers led by as many as 11 points in the final 2 minutes before settling for the final 10-point margin.

Cedric Harris led all scorers with 31 points, five assists and four steals while Falk chipped in with 23 points.

Hester had a huge night on the boards, yanking down a WVIAC season-high and arena-record 21 rebounds to go along with nine points and career-highs of five assists and four steals.

With reigning WVIAC Player of the Week Chris Morrow sidelined by an apparent ankle injury, the West Liberty bench rose to the challenge once again.

In addition to Shawn Dyer's strong performance, true freshman Seger Bonifant hit his first eight shots from the floor, drained 6-of-7 shots from behind the 3-point arc to finish with a career-high 22 points.

Chad Moore led Shepherd with 29 points while Cunningham added 22 points.

WEST LIBERTY - Shepherd's Gabby Flinchum finished off a feed from Rachel Johnson with 23 seconds left to snap a 70-70 tie and lift the visiting Rams to an upset of West Liberty at the ASRC.

Meghan Wiseman had 24 points and nine rebounds while Southworth stuffed the stat sheet with 24 points, eight rebounds, six assists and six steals. Freshman post Kiki Simpson provided a boost off the bench with eight points in 10 minutes of play but no other WLU player had more than four points.

Ohio Valley 64

VIENNA - Jaila Bryant hit a jumper with 1 second left as she helped Wheeling Jesuit sneak past Ohio Valley.

Though the Cards (5-1, 8-16) led virtually the entire way - once pushing a lead to as high as 19 early in the second half on a 3-pointer by Breanna Butler - OVU's Shelby Way drew her team even at 64-64 with a 3-pointer of her own with 54 seconds remaining.

From there, each team missed a 3-pointer before Bryant's jumper fell through the net ahead of the buzzer.

Leading the way for WJU was Butler with 24 points, while Jamie Sobczak added 20 points and 20 rebounds. Bryant finished with 14 points as the Cards were able to withstand 16 turnovers.

Way led Ohio Valley (2-23, 2-19) with 19 points.
