MORGANTOWN - The University High girls' basketball team followed the lead of a talented freshman to a dominating victory in the OVAC tournament semifinals Tuesday night.
Shelby Boyle, a 5-foot-10 forward/center, scored eight of her 11 points in the opening quarter, helping the Hawks to a 71-45 rout of John Marshall, at the UHS gymnasium.
"We came out immediately in our man-to-man defense and picked up the tempo," UHS coach Kamela Meikle said. "Shelby Boyle did a great job with eight points in the first quarter that got us off to a big start. Everybody else fed off that. It was an all-around effort, defensively and offensively."
Mariah Callen pumped in a game-high 20 points, while Kayla Boggs scored 16 and Megan Messiora 10 for the Hawks (14-5), who play for the OVAC title on Saturday night gainst the winner of tonight's Morgantown High-Indian Creek contest. JM will face the loser Thursday night.
Tori Derrow scored 12 points to lead John Marshall (11-8). Sissy George and Kylie Howard added 11 apiece.
