Ten Wheeling Park High School students will compete at the West Virginia Regional Science Bowl today in Morgantown against other qualified teams from the Mountain State.
WPHS students taking part are Shawn Bishop, Casey Wilson, Lauren West, Mason Lee, Jay Coleman, Rishi Chandrasekhar, Aururan Chandrasekhar, Derek Smith, Rebecca Sellers and Lydia Holmstrand.
The regional bowl will consist of a round-robin tournament, where all teams will compete. Only four teams will be selected to go onto the next round in a double-elimination tournament to determine the winner and runner-up.
The students will be competing in hopes of qualifying for the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl in April in Chevy Chase, Md., right outside of Washington, D.C.
The WPHS students were split into two teams of five and won both first and second place at the RESA-level of the competition.
According to Patrick Durkin, WPHS science chair, the students began practicing for the competition in September, answering questions on a wide range of science topics including astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, general science, mathematics and physics.
