Resumes Sought for Open Seat

December 12, 2012
By JOSELYN KING - Political Writer , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

The committee seeking to fill the vacant 1st District West Virginia Senate seat now is accepting resumes.

Those interested in serving as a state senator representing Hancock, Brooke, Ohio and part of Marshall counties must submit their resumes by 5 p.m. Dec. 19. Resumes are being collected by 1st District Senate Replacement Committee member Teresa Toriseva, and there are three ways to send them:

- Drop off or mail resumes to Toriseva Law Offices, 1446 National Road, Wheeling, WV 26003;

- Email resumes to TCT@Toriseva Law.com; or

- Fax resumes to Toriseva Law at 304-238-0149.

Toriseva said the committee plans to meet to consider the resumes either Dec. 20 or Dec. 21 at the Brooke County Library, depending on availability.

The committee has 15 days from Dec. 11 - until Dec. 25, Christmas Day - to recommend three candidates for the 1st District seat previously held by Ohio County commissioner-elect Orphy Klempa and submit them to Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin.

Klempa resigned his state Senate seat earlier this week, and his term expires at the end of 2014.

A prospective candidate must be a registered Democrat living within the 1st District.

Members of the committee are Toriseva and Ohio County Democrat Party Co-Chairman John Saunders representing Ohio County; Brooke County Democrat Chairman John Martino and his wife, Marge Martino, representing Brooke County; and Lil Douglass and Dino Rossi, representing Hancock County.

The 1st District now also includes Marshall County, though its representatives won't be included in the decision because it was not part of the district when Klempa was elected in 2010.

The 1st Senate District also is represented by Sen. Jack Yost, D-Brooke.

State law dictates no two senators can reside in the same county.
