WINTERSVILLE - Super sophomore Bre Berryman definitely is the real deal. On Saturday afternoon against Union Local, her Indian Creek friends weren't bad either.
The reigning Eastern District Division II Player of the Year scored a game-high 26 as the Redskins cruised to a 59-34 Buckeye 8 victory. The triumph moves Erin DeSantis' club to 2-1 after the first week of the season.
Berryman also hauled down 14 rebounds, swatted away eight Union Local shots and dished out a team high four assists. She had 14 points at the half, hitting all seven of her shots.
Junior Kiarra Kamarec contributed 11 points and eight boards while Brooke Mains, the junior point guard, also had eight rebounds and assisted on three Creek hoops.
The other two members of DeSantis' "iron five," junior Kristen Shimko and freshman Bethany Davis split 16 points. Davis was a perfect four for four from the floor.
On the defensive end, the Redskins really picked things up after the intermission, holding the Jets to just eight points (none in the fourth quarter).
Saturday's contest actually was a nip and tuck affair through the first two periods. A Kamarec hoop off a Berryman feed gave the Redskins a 15-13 lead after one.
Dallas Montag buried a triple midway through the second to put the Jets ahead 26-25. Creek closed with a 6-0 run (Shimko had a hoop and Davis two) to grab a 31-26 halftime advantage.
