The owner of Fleet Service Co. told police Wednesday that a thief or thieves stole 34 batteries and three radiators from automobiles in the firm's storage lot.
The towing and repair business has dozens of vehicles parked on its lot on Chapline Street in South Wheeling. The lot is bordered by a locked fence.
The parts were stolen sometime between late Tuesday and around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, when the owner reported the theft to police. The owner estimated the stolen parts to be worth more than $7,000.
Kimball said because so many items were stolen, there likely were multiple perpetrators involved in the theft. Police have no suspects in mind, however, and no video evidence exists. Officers also discovered no sign of forced entry into the lot.
Fleet's owner could not be reached Friday, but Middle Creek Garage employee Jared Sobota estimated a used battery to be worth between $8 and $10. He said an aluminum radiator would be worth around $1.30 per pound, or $5 total.
