TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo Walleye scored early and often Saturday night as they collided with the Wheeling Nailers for the fourth time in 17 days. Toledo scored during the first two minutes of each of the three periods, and added three other goals, defeating Wheeling, 6-1, at Huntington Center. Scott Zurevinski accounted for the Nailers' lone goal late in the third period.
The Walleye got off to a blazing start in the opening period, as they found the back of the net three times. The first marker came at the 58-second mark, when Randy Rowe centered the puck to Kyle Rogers who snapped a shot into the far side of the net. A little more than three minutes later, Toledo added to the lead, courtesy of a power-play goal.
Kent Simpson launched a long pass ahead to Andrej Nestrasil on the right side of the offensive blueline. Nestrasil quickly found Byron Froese, who roofed a shot from the left circle. Willie Coetzee netted the third goal of the period for the home team, tipping Max Campbell's original shot in under the crossbar.
One goal was scored in the second period, and it went Toledo's way. Ben Youds sent a shot in from the right point that was stopped by Patrick Killeen. However, the rebound bounced around in the slot, where it was eventually pushed in by Luke Glendening. Glendening's team-leading seventh goal of the season put the Walleye ahead 4-0 after two.
Early in the third period, the Walleye added to the lead. Glendening stole a puck in neutral ice, broke in alone, and scored on his backhand for a shorthanded tally. Willie Coetzee then netted his second of the night, taking a centering pass from Joey Martin before rifling a slap shot into the back of the cage. The lone bright spot for the Nailers came with 1:48 remaining in the contest, when Zurevinski ruined the shutout bid, ripping in a wrist shot from the left circle for his third of the season.
Simpson earned a victory, stopping 22 of the 23 shots he faced. Killeen took the loss for Wheeling, allowing six goals on 24 shots.
