Approximately four years ago, Tom Burgoyne, a friend of mine, introduced me to Pat Butler and told me, "Pat is a fine man and would make a fine sheriff. Can we count on your support?"
I did not know Pat but on Tom's recommendation agreed to support Pat.
And I did.
Over the past four years, I've had the privilege of working with Pat and also observing his work.
He is indeed a fine sheriff.
A year or so ago, I told Pat if he runs again, he could count on my support.
Recently, I went to see Pat and handed him a check made out to "Committee to Re-elect Pat Butler Sheriff."
He handed it back and said, "Jerry, thank you very much but there is no committee to re-elect Pat Butler and I'm not accepting any monetary help. What I spend on trying to get re-elected comes out of my own pocket."
Never in my 55 years in practice have I run into this response.
Tom Burgoyne was right: Pat is not only a fine sheriff but more importantly he is a fine man.
