WHEELING - As longtime fans of the Wheeling Nailers hockey team, Mike and Josh Strawn are glad to see new video boards and logos inside WesBanco Arena.
However, the father and son also believe the team's new ownership group, along with the arena managers, can do even more to enhance fans' experience at Nailers games.
"I love the new logo," said father Mike Strawn. "The video boards are great too."
"It is just too bad that they do not have the game showing on the video boards. That would make it even better."
"I would like to see a close-up of the game on the video boards," added Josh Strawn. "This is a good start, though."
During the Saturday game against the Reading Royals, the video boards displayed logos, promotions and game information, but the Strawns would prefer to see the actual game on the screens.
Shadyside resident Lisa Gully has supported the team, now owned by the Wheeling Amateur Hockey Association and the Regional Economic Development Partnership, for many years. She also appreciates the new video boards, positioned high above the opposing ends of the rink.
"The experience is a little better now," she said. "I think these improvements are a positive development."
Triadelphia resident Zach Wilson also appreciates the screens, though he emphasized the adoption of black and gold as the teams new colors is even more important. As an ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, the colors now match those of the National Hockey League parent team, he said.
"I do think these new boards add a new dimension to the game," Wilson said.
