By JAY W. BENNETT , Parkersburg News and Sentinel

PARKERSBURG - Logan Cox scored four touchdowns and host Parkersburg South totaled 20 points off four first-half Brooke turnovers Friday night at the Erickson All-Sports Facility as the Patriots improved to 5-3 by rolling past the Bruins, 53-27.

Jordan Quiocho's 3-yard TD run followed by Isaac Boles' extra point at 8:40 of the first quarter put the Patriots ahead quickly, but Brooke answered with a 1-yard sneak from quarterback Alec Buchmelter just 49 seconds later to even the contest.

However, the Patriots (5-3) ended up taking a 34-7 advantage into halftime and scored 33 unanswered points against the Bruins, who fell to 1-6.

Cox, who finished with 165 yards rushing on nine attempts, hit paydirt on a 55-yard scamper at 6:20 of the first to put South ahead for good. After Patriot Tyler Rouse picked off Buchmelter, who threw three and was eventually replaced by Aaron Walker, Braxton Johnson hauled in a 23-yard scoring pass from Tyler Bolen. Bolen missed just one of his first nine attempts and had 157 yards in that span. He finished the game 14 of 20 for 221 yards and two touchdowns.

Johnson's reception gave the now 15th-ranked triple-A Patriots a 20-7 lead after the opening 12 minutes.

Although Cody Hively had a diving interception to end Brooke's ensuing drive, the Patriots missed a field goal. However, Brendan Schwendeman then recovered a Brooke fumble and Cox galloped 39 yards for his second score. After Cox picked off Buchmelter for a third time, the Patriots took a commanding 34-7 advantage with 5:20 left before halftime when Cox took it in from the 9.

Brooke, which was led by freshman Justin Loughrie's 20 carries and 155 yards rushing, had its next-to-last drive of the first half thwarted when South's Logan Dilliner registered a sack.

Bolen found Wes Mitchem open for an 11-yard TD toss as Parkersburg South, which received eight catches and 147 receiving yards from Johnson, scored on its opening possession of the second half and increased its lead to 40-7.

Loughrie broke free on a 42-yard TD run late in the third, but Cox answered just 6 seconds into the final period with his fourth touchdown, this one from 5 yards out.

The Bruins, who trailed in total yards by a count of 302-85 at intermission, got two six-pointers in the fourth quarter. Zac Morris had an 11-yard touchdown run and Aaron Walker hit Joe Staffileno on a 68-yard catch-and-run touchdown. The Patriots, who watched both Mack White and Cody Hively leave the game via injury after halftime, also got a 36-yard TD burst from Cody Smith in the final period
