WHEELING - Peterson Rehabilitation Hospital located in the residential section of Woodsdale offers a complete array of healthcare services to the residents in the tri-state area. Peterson is proud to be an active member of the community and on repeatedly being voted "Best in the Valley" for its superior Rehabilitation and Nursing Programs.
What makes Peterson different from other healthcare facilities in the area? They offer Acute Rehabilitation, Skilled Nursing, Long Term Living, and Outpatient Therapy all in one convenient location. Along with the large compliment of highly skilled nurses, therapists and physicians, Peterson also utilizes the most current state of the art equipment in the therapy department. Peterson utilizes Accelerated Care Plus (ACP) to reach beyond the role of traditional therapeutic regimens by offering patient centered treatment programs specializing in joint replacement, arthritis, pain, wound healing, fall prevention, stroke recovery, and bladder control to name a few. In addition, Peterson has recently installed the world's first "virtual" rehabilitation system for aging adults called the OmniVR. This new technology is making the rehabilitation process more fun and exciting for patients. The OmniVR uses a sophisticated 3D "time of flight" camera to capture the patient's image and specialized computer software converts it into an "avatar" which is introduced into a game-like environment displayed on a large color monitor. With the assistance and supervision of a therapist, patients participate in a variety of "interactive" exercises and activities selected for the individual's specific condition or physical challenge. The programs focus on strength, balance, mobility, walking, endurance and memory.
Peterson's acute rehabilitation unit admits patients who have experienced a traumatic injury, debilitating disease or needs rehab following certain types of surgery. Acute Rehabilitation is appropriate for patients who will benefit from an intensive, multidisciplinary rehabilitation program. Patients receive physical, occupational and speech therapy as needed and are medically managed by specially trained physicians.

The plant beds are at a height that makes gardening accessible to patients using wheelchairs and walkers. Pictured from left are LaRue Bruce, Alice France and Hannah Sigal.

Using an interdisciplinary team approach, the inpatient rehabilitation program at Peterson focuses upon helping patients regain the ability to walk after an amputation, regain functional independence after a stroke, or learning to safely take daily medications after a serious illness. Rehabilitation can be used to retrain a person on the basics of activities of daily living or may be used to help an elderly person recover muscle strength and balance when recuperating after a fall. Patients who are usually referred to the acute rehabilitation unit include those with a diagnosis of current or old stroke, neurological disorders including Parkinson's disease, brain injury, non-traumatic spinal cord disorder/injury, amputation, multiple injuries due to trauma, and certain orthopedic conditions such as hip fracture or joint replacements. The Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit is located on the first floor at Peterson Rehabilitation Hospital. Each patient admitted to the Acute Rehabilitation Unit receives three hours of individualized therapy a day with therapy provided seven days a week. Patients can be admitted from the acute hospital or from home if there has been a decline from a previous illness or injury. The goal for each patient on this unit is to return back to the community at the highest possible level of functioning.
The Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Program at Peterson has implemented Comprehensive Primary Care Nursing. Primary Care Nursing is a system for the distribution of nursing care in which care of the patient is managed by one nurse who directs, provides and coordinates all care for that patient personally when on duty.
Some advantages of this system include lower nurse to patient ratios; continuity of care for the patient; accountability of the nurse for that care; and patient-centered care that is comprehensive, individualized, and coordinated. Typically patients are admitted to the Comprehensive Skilled Nursing Program because they are in need of continuation of a longer period of recuperation while still receiving professional nursing and therapy services to achieve the functional independence needed to successfully return home.
At Peterson we have transformed Long Term Care to Long Term Living by focusing on the quality of life of our residents. It is our goal to maintain a homelike environment for our residents while providing a safe and friendly atmosphere. The addition of the Cozy Corner Caf on the second floor of the hospital has increased socialization, appetites, and terrific aromas that permeate throughout the facility when cooking and baking.
The outpatient therapy department is renowned for its services. Whether the need be for physical, occupational, speech or lymphedema therapy, the therapy staff at Peterson prides themselves on producing great outcomes for all patients. Former patients and residents enjoy the benefits of free transportation to continue their therapy after they are discharged home. Need outpatient therapy?
