On Friday Aug. 24, the Susan B. Anthony List, Women Speak Out: Abortion Is Not Healthcare National Bus Tour stopped in Wheeling for a brief afternoon press conference. I had the honor of being one those speaking out. On the SBAlist.org website, there is a video of each day's speakers. The tour began is Iowa, continued to Wisconsin, came through Ohio - with our stop in Wheeling, through proceeded to Virginia on its way to Florida.
Since this topic is very timely and crucial to our nation now and in the next few months, I would like to share my words with my Valley neighbors.
Let me start by saying that I did not always have the same world-view as I do today. Yes, I was a feminist; one of those women's libbers in the 60s. As I have matured, I have been blessed with a change of heart and with a change of mind, as well as with a relationship with my Creator - the same Creator who endowed me with certain inalienable rights, one of which is the right to life.
I believe that life begins at conception. If you say you are pro-life with exceptions, you are saying that a fetus is life only when it is socially acceptable. The definition of life should not be determined based on whether or not the child is wanted, planned or even the result of something that should never have happened. Deuteronomy 24:16 says that sons should not pay for the sins of their fathers.
Now, those of us who believe this are being forced to violate our religious convictions, by an administration intent on chipping away at my rights and your rights - rights that were guaranteed to us by the Constitution that our founding fathers so painstakingly crafted. Our religious liberty is becoming a casualty of the Obama Administration. The new health law, which we all know as Obamacare, simply expands government too far.
Health care refers to illness or disease. Pregnancy is not a disease to be cured. Abortion does not remove some part of a woman's body. It destroys the body of a separate human being. This law equates abortion with health care. It equates the taking of a human life with having your appendix removed or your tonsils taken out. This law will require every employer with a conscience to violate that conscience by being required to provide healthcare that kills instead of heals.
But this is nothing new from President Obama. He is the most pro-abortion president in history. Before that, he was one of the most pro-abortion senators. In 2003, Congress passed the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act. Upon finding out the brutal way that this procedure accomplished its task, banning partial birth abortion found support with individuals across the political spectrum. However, Barack Obama was not one of them and as a presidential candidate, he criticized the Supreme Court for upholding the ban's constitutionality. But it was as an Illinois state senator that Barack Obama's callous attitude toward life reared it ugly head in the worst way. He voted several times against protecting children who had survived a botched abortion attempt. This man opposed protecting fully delivered children who were left for dead in a hospital utility room.
This November, we must let our voices be heard loud and clear. The president and those who think as he does, must be replaced. My neighbors in Ohio, where I was born and raised, have a chance to retire Sen. Sherrod Brown from public office and replace him with his pro-life Republican opponent, State Treasurer Josh Mandel. Sherrod Brown was tied with eight other senators in 2011 for the title of Most Liberal Senator. He is the most pro abortion senator in the US Senate. He has a 100 percent pro-choice voting record. He is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus; he voted no on making it a crime to harm a fetus during another crime; he voted no on banning partial birth abortions; he voted no on prohibiting minors from crossing state lines for abortions; he voted no on a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage; he voted no on allowing prayer in schools during the War on Terror; he voted no on protecting the Pledge of Allegiance; and the list goes on. Neighbors, I don't believe these are your values. Maybe it's time you voted no on Sherrod Brown.
As for us West Virginians, we have a senator who has decided his best course of action is to distance himself from President Obama; especially after his fellow Democrats voted 41 percent for felon Keith Judd in the primary election. Last year, Senator Manchin was endorsed by West Virginians for Life; but he betrayed us. His votes to allow taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood and in support of Obamacare will not be forgotten. His challenger, John Raese is pro-life and can be counted on to vote for the repeal of the baby killing Obamacare. He deserves our support. Obamacare limits competition, restricts personal choice and surrenders our power over healthcare. Obamacare tramples on the right to the free exercise of religion and individual freedom and it should be repealed.
Until that happens, I and others like me, will continue standing up for religious liberty and speaking out for those without a voice. Romney-Ryan and the Republican Party have not declared a war on women. The real war is President Obama's war on babies.
