CLARKSBURG - Thadd Obecny II captured medalist honors Monday as the Wheeling Park High School golf team opened its season with a victory in the 27-team Pete Dye Invitational.
Obecny, the two-time defending West Virginia Class AAA individual champion, fired a 2-under-par 70 and defeated Bluefield's Evan Smith in a one-hole playoff
Park and University finished with team scores of 223 and needed to go to the fourth golfer's score to break the tie. There, the Patriots' Scott Hand topped the Hawks' Jonathon Matheny, 82-93.
Cole Hand added a 75 for Park, the two-time defending Class AAA champs, while Dylan Wojcik fired a 78.
Freddy Fitzsimmons scored an 86 to lead Wheeling Central to an 18th place finish. Thomas Stanley added a 90 for the Maroon Knights, while Justin Leonard and Sean McFarland had a 92 and 103, respectively.
Parkersburg South was seventh in the team standings, while Morgantown was 10th.
