In reference to a recent letter by Dr. Ruben:
Dr. Ruben's column was interesting. However, here is another viewpoint:
The figures that were published are similar to those used for years by anti-Second Amendment groups, such as the Brady people. One of their favorite ploys concerning children's deaths is to include individuals in the 18-21 age group that are gang-bangers, i.e. the Bloods, Crips, Hell's Angels. Second, there is no way to track the authenticity of those figures. (Figures don't lie, but liars often figure).
Dr. Ruben's method would produce a national federal registration system. History tells us that "registration is the first step to confiscation" (For example: Stalin, Hitler, Chavez, Castro, etc. These dictators said, "turn in your weapons, the government will protect you."). The same tactics are used by the terrorists engaging in "ethnic cleansing."
If you believe that it couldn't happen in this country, they you must feel that all politicians, every single one is 100 percent honest, ethical , and moral. That being the case, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.
How about "Operation Fast and Furious" where our government forced legitimate gun dealers to sell firearms by the thousands to known criminals, murderers and drug dealers, using taxpayers' dollars?
The president and attorney general deny any knowledge of the operation. If you believe that, I have a second bridge to sell you.
I would also suggest that you research the August 1946 "Battle of Athens," involving the towns of Athens and Etowah, Tenn.
Next, reference to "The National Police Foundation." I have yet to meet a law enforcement officer who has heard of it. If you want police input on firearms, contact legitimate sources such as the National Fraternal Order of Police, or the various police unions. Don't speak with the chiefs, many of whom are political appointees, but the officer on the street.
Dr. Ruben would have the gun owner responsible for a minor's illegal use. How about an automobile, a baseball, a hunting knife? I agree that punishment is needed, but only to the perpetrator. As far as making firearms ownership a privilege, then let's take away other parts of the Constitution such as separation of church and state (Oops, the president is already working on that), or the right against self incrimination.
No, it's not a good idea to tamper with the Constitution. Once started, it's like a snowball rolling downhill. We have the laws against firearms use, but they must be enforced. Now, if a criminal is considering entering your home, he or she doesn't know if your are armed. Imagine what would occur if that wasn't the case.
"If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns."

To Sports Field
Editor, News-Register:Except for the students at Wheeling Central Catholic High School, there are very few young people in the East Wheeling area where a proposed ballfield is to be built.
I would like to suggest that Wheeling City Council vote to abandon that project. Instead, part of the money could be used to complete the funding for construction of the Miracle Field, and the remainder to rebuild Fort Henry. This would accomplish two things: It would contribute toward a field that is needed and is supported by the community; Fort Henry would bring visitors, small businesses and revenue to Wheeling.
Please consider this as an alternative to a plan that destroys historic homes, and is not self-sustaining or income-generating for city renewal.
