Presenting the 2012 Cotillion

Continuing a tradition, the 2012 Cotillion will launch the 31st annual Viennese Winter Ball with a waltz in Glessner Auditorium of Oglebay Park's Wilson Lodge Saturday, Feb. 4.

Twenty seniors at area high schools - 10 young women and 10 young men - have been selected for this year's Cotillion, based on a point system for service to the Wheeling Symphony and its auxiliary. The formal affair, orchestrated by the Viennese Winter Ball committee, serves as a fundraiser for the symphony.

Dixie Ellwood and Laura Andreini are co-chairs of the 2012 ball. Other members of the ball committee are Jean Bailey, Roanne Burech, Saun Capehart, Ellen Culler, Betsy Delk, Hali Exley, Jane Helfer, Judi Hendrickson, Sherry Hennen, Gretchen Hooper, Audrey Irvin, Paula McClure, Vicky Musicaro and Phyllis Sigal.

The young women chosen for the Cotillion are as follows:

- Alice Catherine Boos, daughter of Martha Wright of Wheeling and the late Paul Boos;

- Christine Frances Fanning, daughter of Cheryl Wonderly and Dr. Robert Fanning of Wheeling;

- Kelsey Renee Fithen, daughter of Renee and Rod Fithen of Rayland;

- Christine Nicholl Gompers, daughter of Victoria and Matthew Gompers of Wheeling;

- Emily Sue Hobbs, daughter of Karen and Roland Hobbs of Wheeling;

- Morgan Leigh McDermott, daughter of Laurie and Greg McDermott of Wheeling;

- Lauren Nicole Smaltz, daughter of Frances Smaltz and Dr.

Virgil Smaltz of Wheeling;

- Angela Rose Sparachane, daughter of Patti and Nick Sparachane of Wheeling;

- Ashley Victoria Terek, daughter of Christina and Michael Terek of Wheeling;

- Elizabeth Stewart Wright, daughter of Debbie and John Wright IV of Wheeling.

The young men serving in the Cotillion are as follows:

- James Nicholas Brinsky, son of Dr. Mary Hammond and Jim Brinsky of Wheeling;

- Dylan Michael Curtis, son of Linda and Rodney Curtis of Wheeling;

- John Ross Felton III, son of Rhonda and Jack Felton of Wheeling;

- Erik Thomas Gompers, son of Sarah and Tom Gompers of Wheeling;

- Michael Edgar Hooper Jr., son of Gretchen and Michael Hooper of Wheeling;

- Louis Christopher Khourey, son of Charlotte Ann Khourey and Louis Harvey Khourey of Wheeling;

- James McFarlane McClure, son of Paula and James McClure of Wheeling;

- James Michael O'Brien II, son of Denise and Jim O'Brien of Wheeling;

- Marcus Trent Aquino Saludes, son of Dr. Marissa and Dr. Melvin Saludes of Wheeling;

- Anthony Charles Thompson, son of Suzanne Pucharich Thompson and Richard Thompson of Wheeling.

Taking a look at the female Cotillion members' accomplishments and activities:

Boos attends Wheeling Park High School, where she is an athletic trainer and a member of National Honor Society, American Cancer Society Youth Board, student council and Habitat for Humanity. She also is a dance student and teacher. She plans to attend Temple University to study sports medicine.

Fanning also attends Wheeling Park High, where she participates in soccer, track, fencing, swimming, tae kwondo, set crew, running crew and science bowl. She plans to attend Penn State University and major in chemistry.

Fithen attends Linsly School, where she is a senior prefect, a member of SADD, Key and Invisible Children clubs and participates in cross country and tennis. She plans to attend National Guard training in the summer and go to school in Chicago to major in psychology. Her goal is to become a child psychiatrist.

Gompers attends Wheeling Central Catholic High School, where she is a member of National Honor Society, Guys and Girls United to Serve, French Club and tennis and soccer teams. She participates in peer ministry, Wheeling Youth Leadership and as a volunteer for Ohio Valley Medical Center and Miracle League. She plans to attend West Virginia University and pursue a career in pharmacy.

Hobbs attends Linsly, where she participates in soccer and track and is a member of German, Shakespeare, Outdoor Adventure, Ski and Snowboard and Invisible Children clubs. She wants to attend Bethany College.

McDermott also attends Linsly, where she is captain of the varsity tennis team and a member of SADD, Key, Spanish, Invisible Children and Children's Museum clubs. She plans to attend college and major in communications.

Smaltz attends Wheeling Park High, where she is a member of National Honor Society, National Thespian Society, Park Players, Key Club, Hi-Y, student council and serves as a mentor and tutor. She plans to attend WVU for an undergraduate degree, then enter medical school to become a pediatric emergency physician.

Sparachane attends Wheeling Central Catholic High School, where she is a member of National Honor Society, peer ministry, yearbook staff, Teens for Life and Drugs Free Club of America. She is co-founder of the "Get in the Game" fundraiser, treasurer of student council, a basketball player and participant in Wheeling Youth Leadership. She plans to attend college.

Terek attends Wheeling Park High and is a member of the strings program. She also plays violin in the Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra. She plans to obtain a business administration degree from WVU and a specialized degree in funeral service management from Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science.

Wright attends Linsly, where she participates in varsity volleyball and tennis and is a member of Children's Museum, SADD and Invisible Children clubs. She plans to attend WVU and study business and economics.

The male Cotillion members also are accomplished and involved in many activities, to wit:

Brinsky attends Linsly, where he is a member of National Honor Society and German National Honor Society and participates in baseball and cross country. He attended Mountaineer Boys State and received a scholarship for a study trip to Nuremberg, Germany. He plans to attend college and study business and German.

Curtis also attends Linsly, where he plays lacrosse and soccer. He plans to attend college and medical school.

Felton attends Wheeling Park High, where he is a member of SADD, Key Club, Park Players, National Honor Society, National Forensic League, National Thespian Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Quill and Scroll, yearbook staff and is newspaper editor. He has lettered in varsity tennis for the past three years. An active member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph, he plans to attend Queens University in Charlotte, N.C.

Gompers attends Wheeling Central Catholic High School, where he is football captain; plays varsity baseball and lacrosse and is involved in peer ministry, Teens for Life and canned food drive and is a member of National Honor Society and French Honor Society. A member of St. Michael Catholic Church, he is a volunteer for Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center and Relay for Life. He plans to attend WVU and major in medicine.

Hooper attends Wheeling Park High, where he is president of Leo Club, treasurer of National Thespian Society, freshman mentor, REAP counselor and a member of Young Patriots, jazz band, Park Players, Judicial Scholars and National Honor Society. A participant in Wheeling Youth Leadership and Boys State, he is a volunteer at Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church. He plans to attend college and law school.

Khourey attends Linsly, where he is head of the learning and instruction committee; junior and senior prefect; plays hockey and lacrosse and is a member of pep band, Key, SADD and Animal Shelter clubs. An altar server at Our Lady of Lebanon Church, he plans to travel to Germany and attend college.

McClure attends Linsly, where he is head prefect, senior class president and Key Club member. He participates in speech team, school plays, golf, swimming and baseball. He plans to attend college.

O'Brien attends Wheeling Park High, where he is a member of the football team, Ohio County strings program and WPHS orchestra. A member of Edgwood Evangelical Lutheran Church, he plans to study business, economics and entrepreneurship in college.

Saludes attends Linsly, where he is golf captain; participates in swimming and tennis and is a member of SADD, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Model UN and Multicultural clubs. He plans to attend college and graduate school to acquire a doctorate in business.

Thompson also attends Linsly, where he is a four-year player of football and lacrosse and a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Shakespeare and German clubs. A member of St. Michael Catholic Church and a volunteer at Wheeling Hospital, he plans to attend a university and major in pre-psychology.
