Saving Stray Cats, Dogs From Traffic

October 1, 2011
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Editor, News-Register:

When you see a dog or cat running loose in and out of traffic and your heart sinks like mine, you can help. Just all the sheriff's office to report the endangered animal. Moreover, if possible, try to keep the animal out of harm's way until authorities arrive.

By calling you will be, more than likely, saving the animal's life and/or saving the animal from injury. The authorities will transport the animal to the local animal shelter, which will care for him or her.

I also encourage animal guardians who have "lost" animals to keep in contact with area animal shelters.

Lastly, it is essential to have an identification tag with your phone number on your animal's collar. This will expedite their return to you.
