WHEELING -- Wheeling police are looking for a person of interest in the shooting that claimed the life of a man late Friday in the Woodsdale section of the city, while Steubenville police have arrested a man in a separate shooting that left a Steubenville resident injured early Sunday.

Wheeling police investigators today identified the man shot in a moving car in Woodsdale late Friday as Omoniyi Bakare, 22, of Woodridge, Va., according to Wheeling Police Chief Robert Matheny.

Bakare was a student at West Virginia University. He previously played football at Fairmont State University.

Matheny said officers have spoken with the victim's family.

Work on the case continued Sunday, and matheny said officers were still working to locate a person of interest in the shooting. Police are attempting to locate Darrian Tyrone Cordell, aka "Dube," a 20-year-old, Columbus resident.

Investigators believe Cordell may have crucial information related to the shooting.

Cordell is currently wanted by the U.S. Marshal's Service and Columbus Police Department on charges of weapons under disability and drug trafficking. He is considered to be dangerous, according to the Wheeling Police Department.

Wheeling Police received a call about 11:45 p.m. Friday reporting a possible shooting victim in the 800 block of National Road, according to Deputy Police Chief Martin Kimball. When officers arrived, Wheeling Fire Department members already were working to resuscitate a young, black male on the sidewalk.

Kimball said witnesses told officers they heard a "pop" before the victim was either thrown from or escaped from a black vehicle. The vehicle then left the area traveling west on National Road. Kimball said the man emerged from a window on the driver's side of the car and rolled to the curb while the vehicle was still moving.

The victim died en route to a local hospital.

In Steubenville, Gary A. Redman, 34, of 1219 State St. was charged with felonious assault after he allegedly shot a man three times around 4:15 a.m. Sunday at a house at 421 McKee St.

City police reported getting a 911 call about a person shot inside the residence. An officer saw blood on the front porch and found David J. Green, 32, of the residence inside laying on a couch. The officer reported it appeared Green was shot three times and he was in visible pain.

Green was taken to Trinity Medical Center West for initial treatment and then transported to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Police Chief Bill McCafferty said Green at first said he didn't know who shot him and that he wasn't having problems with anyone. Green then told police at the hospital that it was Redman who shot him, McCafferty said. Green then said he wanted to file charges, the chief said.

The shooting may be related to Redman's girlfriend, police reported.

Police reported the bullets were in Green's pelvis and abdomen, and one shot was a graze to the calf, police reported. It appeared Green was sitting when he was shot, according to reports.

Redman and Green live about a block apart.
