WHEELING - The search for suspects in a malicious wounding that sent a man to Wheeling Hospital was under way Saturday.

Deputy Police Chief Martin Kimball said Jamie McCamic was taken to Wheeling Hospital after officers were called to the area of Bridge Street Middle School on reports of an assault. Kimball said McCamic, a 25-year-old white man from Valley Grove, was walking with a friend along National Road about 1:25 a.m. Saturday when the incident occurred.

Kimball said reports allege two other white males approached McCamic, started an argument and assaulted him. McCamic fell to the ground, Kimball said, striking his head. Kimball noted, though, that investigators have received conflicting reports about what happened to McCamic.

"We do have one suspect, but I will not release the name at this time," Kimball said Saturday.

While officers were at the hospital continuing their investigation, McCamic was undergoing tests related to a head injury and could not provide a statement. Kimball believed McCamic was placed in the intensive care unit, though a hospital spokesman could not be reached Saturday to confirm that or to provide an update on McCamic's condition.
