The Rain Has Been Nothing But A Nuisance

WHEELING - In case you haven't been keeping track, and that's not too bad a bet considering the absolutely awful weather we've been having this spring, the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Baseball semifinals are less than a week away. Let me repeat: the OVAC Baseball semifinals are a week away.

Area coaches are no doubt scrambling to get some final, key games rescheduled in hopes of qualifying. The games will be held at the following locations with games at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively: Class AAAA (Glen Dale); Class AAA (Cadiz); Class AA (Toronto); and Class A (Brookside).

I'm often a victim of the present, but in the 12-plus years I've been in the newspaper business I can't remember this many baseball/softball games being affected by weather. Numerous times, though, games have been called off under what appeared to be ideal conditions. The problem, however, is when it has rained, it's literally poured and that does in games sometimes one or two days in advance.

I don't envy these coaches one bit. They're trying to do the best they can for their kids, but time is running out.

Senior Bowling

Seniors will have the chance to hit the lanes at 11:30 a..m. on May 13 at the Ventures Lanes in St. Albans. That's where the 7th annual Bowling Tournament for Fun, for bowlers age 50-plus will take place.

Bowlers are expected to check-in at 11 a.m. and the cost is $12 per person, with checks being made payable to Venture Lanes, 6300 McCorkle Ave., St. Albans, WV 25177. Perhaps the best part is, you don't have to bring a partner - the tournament will provide one for you.

Trophies will be awarded to the top-3 male and female finishers, and everyone gets a T-shirt.

Stadium Experience?

Fans of the Wheeling Nailers are encouraged to checkout Stadium Journey (www.stadiumjourney.com), a website that provides reviews of professional and college stadiums. One there, you'll be able to find out what regional correspondent Joshua Guiher has to say about the Nailers' home, WesBanco Arena.

I personally found the site, owned by Paul Swaney, to be both well-done and informative. And to boot, ''The Bank'' received a fairly good review.
