Bill and Sandra Magyar Beese of Herndon, Va., announce the engagement of their daughter, Dr. Sara Elizabeth Beese of Cambridge, Mass., to Dr. Joshua Joyner Sims, also of Cambridge. He is the son of Nina Sims of Tallahassee, Fla., and Dr. Joyner Sims of Atlanta, Ga.
Beese is the granddaughter of Joe Magyar of Martins Ferry. She is a 2001 graduate of Herndon High School. She was a Schreyer Honors Scholar at the Pennsylvania State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and molecular biology in 2005. She received a doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology from Johns Hopkins University in 2010. She holds a research position at Harvard Medical School.
Sims graduated from Marianna High School in Florida in 1996 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the University of Florida in 2000. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Tanzania for two years and then resumed his education, earning a doctorate in biophysics from Johns Hopkins University in 2009. He holds a research position at Harvard Medical School.
An April 17 wedding is planned in Baltimore, Md.
